         About Us

AVA Ecology Ltd is a local Monmouthshire family business and we have been working in the environmental sector for 27 years including 15 years of bat surveys, conservation and ecological consultancy.

Over that time we have worked with a large network of local builders,  roofers, architects and planning agents, and have built an excellent working relationship with Local Authority and Natural Resources Wales.  We have carried out many bat surveys on Grade I and Grade II listed buildings projects and obtained development licences for The National Trust, CADW and the Church in Wales as well as over 100 licenses for householders.

Our team of ecologists are bat specialists and conservationists with many years experience which means we can provide solutions to any ecological problems.

The quality of our work is consistently high, and we closely  follow guidelines for ecological surveys from the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) The Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) as well as BS42020:2013(Code of Practice for Planning and Development). â€‹

What Makes Us Different?

As we have been living and surveying bats in Monmouthshire for many years, we have built up a vast knowledge of bat activity and bat roosts in the county and we are also very experienced working in SSSI and SAC designated sites. This helps us to understand the ecology of development sites in Monmouthshire and adds quality to our work. Our excellent working relationship with the local planning authority and Natural Resources Wales ensures that planning and licensing delays are kept to a minimum.

Being a small local business means we do not need to charge extortionate fees or expenses, and we will never recommend additional surveys unless they are absolutely necessary to achieve planning approval or licensing. We always respond immediately to phone calls and e mails so that our clients are able to communicate with us effectively, giving them peace of mind

We go the extra mile for our clients so that they have a hassle free planning experience and achieve their development goals.

FAQs

Why are Bat Surveys Important?

Bat surveys are essential for understanding bat use of buildings and trees prior to submitting planning applications such as listed building consent, householder planning applications, fast track applications or tree work applications. The local authority (and homeowners) have a legal duty to ensure protected species such as bats, are not impacted by planning developments.

What Should I Expect During a Bat Survey?

We carry out a daytime preliminary roost assessment to look for any evidence for bats and any potential in buildings and trees to accommodate roosting bats.  If evidence or potential for roosting bats is identified, further surveys known as dusk or dawn bat emergence & activity surveys are required.  If bats emerge from the building, then a bat licence from NRW will be required. How Do We Support Bat Conservation?

Most people believe having bats in a building will stop development,  well, the truth is they don't and it's just scaremongering. We are committed to providing a pragmatic and common sense approach to bat surveys to ensure bats are no longer given a bad name. This will help ensure that bat roosts and foraging habitats are not destroyed, are enhanced,  and therefore help to conserve bats.

What Legislation Protects Bats?

Bats and their habitats are legally protected under various laws, including the Wildlife and Countryside Act and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations, which safeguard their habitats and welfare.
